Iron pyrite (12/18/2004) Iron pyrite (FeS2) or fools gold in its raw form |

Due to high temperatures, the sulfur is oxidized by oxygen present through the side arm vents of the flasks. Sulfur dioxide / trioxide combined with atmospheric water vapor to form sulfuric acid residue of the flask walls. |
